The Mushroom Hut

Hi! I know it’s been a long time. The school semester ended for me tonight, so hopefully I will keep up with this blog thing. Lots of things have been going on here. Cameron made his first science project for school (see picture below). It’s the solar system. We had a great time making it. Cameron recently had field day at school. I didn’t get any pictures, but he did great. Andrew has been a hand full. He is definitely a difficult child. Audrey is just the opposite. She is such a sweet easygoing little lady. It is so interesting to see the difference in the behavior between boys and girls. While the boys are wrestling and playing swords, Audrey is pushing around her toy shopping cart with her Barbie heals on and a purse on her shoulder.

Like always, I’ve been obsessing about health/nutrition lately. I stopped eating cheese on a regular basis at the beginning of the year. I’ve had it 3 or 4 times since then, but not in the last month or so. I just started reading The China Study and I can say for sure that I will not be consuming dairy again. If you have not read it, I highly recommend it. I am also making my way through the cookbook Vegan Planet. Yes, I’m a dork. I read cookbooks for fun. I have Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan and a stack of other books on the table to attack. I’m so glad to have a break from school for a while (excited about next semester though).

I want to not have to buy dairy for my family. I’ve switched everyone in the house to dairy free “cheese” but Ryan and Cameron need their milk. Buying dairy bothers me more than buying meat. I’ve been buying their (Ryan and Cameron‘s) meat through a local coop. There I can get grass fed beef without added hormones, antibiotics and whatever other crap that comes with the meat at the grocery store.

5 Things
1. It takes 15 pounds of grain to grow one pound of beef.
2. Over 70% of the grain produced in the United States is fed to animas for slaughter.
3. To produce one pound of beef, 5000 gallons of water is needed. Only 25 gallons of water are needed to grow one pound of tomatoes or wheat.
4. The petroleum in 14 plastic bags could drive a car 1 mile.
5. Americans throw away 14 billion plastic bags every year.
